Palm Beach Draughtsmen Gazette
November 1997

The Gazette Needs Help

As much as Mardie and Bob have enjoyed putting the Draughtsmen's Gazette newsletter together, it has become difficult since Mardie went back to work full time. She now spends eleven and a half hours away from home, five days a week, she has obligations several nights during the week and can barely keep up with the house and animals during the weekend. The newsletter takes a total of 6 to 8 hours monthly, including printing and mailing. Because of their new schedule, they can't seem to find the time, to fit in the hours needed from deadline 'til the Gazette needs to go to press. If someone would volunteer, or be volunteered, to pick up the proofs and run them to Kinko's (or the printer of their choice) and mail them, it would take a huge load off their shoulders. PLEASE call Mardie or Bob (after 6:30pm) to help. Also, it would help if submissions were in LONG BEFORE the deadline, so they could work a couple hours at a time and not all at once.

When nature called, life was in jeopardy

First I want to apologize for the newsletter being late, but I have a good reason . While on vacation in North Carolina last month, I had a near death experience that has changed me forever. I went horseback riding (and yes I had put away a few brews first). Everything was going fine until the horse started galloping out of control. I tried with all my might to hang on, but was thrown off. Just when I thought things could not possibly get worse, my foot got caught in the stirrup. When this happened, I fell head first to the ground. My head continued to bounce hard as the horse did not stop or even slow down. Just as I was losing consciousness the Walmart man

Mel's Meanderings
If you missed the last meeting, you missed the opportunity to sample excellent examples of the various categories of mead thanks to Drew Griffin, your Chairman of the Education Committee. Drew brought back some commercial bottles of mead from his recent vacation to the Finger Lakes region of New York and very generously shared them with his fellow Draughtsmen. The night proved to be one of the best and most informative meetings to date. Drew is very knowledgeable regarding mead and he would be glad to share his knowledge with anyone who is interested in pursuing mead making. Also, our host, Jim of Castaways, once again offered $1 Warsteiners during the meeting. Castaways has been very generous with the PBD and seem to really appreciate our business. It is planned to have Castaways host the Hurricane Blowoff to be held on March 21. Last year they did an exceptional job of providing service, space and an excellent banquet dinner. Stop in for dinner and beer when you get the chance. Castaways has been good to us and deserve our support. A group of PBDers attended the German Club Oktoberfest on October 18 to sample great beer and food and, of course, participate in the ceremonial tapping of the kegwhich is then dispensed free until it runs out. A great keg of Spaten fest beer! This year the beer was more expensive (who said that inflation is at 2%) at $13 for a pitcher and there were not as many selections of real German suds. In addition to the Warsteiner, Bitburger and Spaten, there was an Alt by Deibold and Kostreitzer's Schwarzbeer. The best surprise, which led to a rather lethargic Sunday, was the famous Tucher dopplebock, Bajuvator. What a delicious example of a very difficult to brew strong German beer. Huge malt nose and of course very chewy on the palate. The higher than normal alcohol was also evident both in the tasting and in the nearly immediate effects to the mind and body. As always, the Draughtsmen behaved in an exceptional manner. Vince constructed a PBD standard to display our colors on the table which included, in addition to the PBD crest, a Marlins and a Dolphin flag. The food was good, but not as good as the PBD Oktoberfest fare.

Up Coming Meetings
The next planning meeting is Thur. November 6 at 7:30 at Castaways. Please come if you would like to participate in the planning of club activities. Be sure to make the next general meeting to be held at Castaways on Thursday, November 13. Who knows what fantastic educational treat Drew and Andy might have in store for you.
