WHAT’S BREWIN’

Well short and sweet this month. By the time you read this the Oktoberfest will have come and gone. I would like to thank all who helped out. Without you folks there would be no Oktoberfest.

We have only received 2 nominations for the new meeting location. Come on people we can do better than this. Just remember we are at Castaways till this is resolved.

We also need to be looking for a hotel to hold the Blow Off ’99. It needs to include banquet and conference facilities. We also need cooler space and a block of rooms. So step up with your suggestions.

The Christmas party is just around the corner you know. How about an hors derves party. You know everybody brings a different dish from a selection of recipies, and we all share. Don’t forget to get brewing for this year’s competition season.

Peace, drewbrew

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

This month’s newsletter is a nice re-cap of some of the events that have happened in the last month. We have had 2 contests, the Home Brewer’s Outlet is moving, and we have some Brew News.

I am going to sound like a broken record but we can use Beer and Food Recipes, as well as articles for the upcoming newsletters. I am looking for things that relate to Thanksgiving and the Holidays. Maybe you’re favorite Wassail recipe or that secret stuffing for your turkey; share it with the rest of the brew club via our newsletter.

Don’t forget there is less than 6 months to the next Hurricane Blow-Off, so start brewing.

Happy Aging,

Jamie

INDEPENDENCE BREWERY RESULTS

If you missed the Independence Brewery 3rd Annual Homebrewers Contest you missed a good afternoon of Beer and Food. We witnessed the defeat of FSU by some school in the Hills of the Southeast and enjoyed a buffet of Wings, Spinach Dip and Pasta. As the beers got knocked out of the competition they were added to the wall of shame. The wall wasn’t all that shameful though, because there were a lot of good beers on it but not quite good enough to edge out the competition (Sort of like FSU). Anyway we had a great afternoon with our neighboring Brew Club FLAB (Ft. Lauderdale Area Brewers). After announcing this years winner we were able to sample last year’s brew for a donation of $1. It came out very good, so the pressure is on for Wayne to honor us with an excellent brew next year. Enough talk, on to the results. There wasn’t really a 1st 2nd 3rd, but rather just a Best of Show but we still have 3 winners, 2 of them are from the Palm Beach Draughtsmen. Wayne took Best of Show and Mel received an Honorable Mention.

Best of Show Wayne Desmond California Common

Runner Up Dave Fischer Special Bitter

Honorable Mention Mel Thompson Oktoberfest

New Brew at The Store by The Beer Gourmet

Lobko Bohemian Lager – This beer is brewed at the Lobkowicz Brewery in the Czech Republic. A brewery that claims to have been established in 1466. The color is deep gold, with a medium head. Some hops in the aroma along with sweet malt, and some vegetable notes. The flavor was sweet. It tried to bitter on the back end, but it lost out to the sweetness and some oxidation flavors. Not balanced. It seemed to me as though it was a toned down version of the style, which didn’t travel well. Not Recommended

The Tanner’s Jack – Brewed at the Morland Brewery in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England. This is the same brewery that produces Old Speckled Hen. It is 4.4 % alc./vol. with a dark copper color and a thin but lasting head. It smelled slightly of hops with some malt, and fruity esters. There is a light malt flavor with a balanced bitterness. The carbonation was soft and smooth. Serving temperature is very important here (50*F). This is a nice ordinary bitter. Recommended

King & Barnes I.P.A. – Brewed in Horsham England. The label states that it is brewed to their original 150-year-old recipe. The beer is copper colored with a medium head. There are a lot of hops in the aroma, with a balanced malt and alcohol aroma. The flavor mirrors the aroma and is equally as balanced. The beer is bottle conditioned, so poor slowly. This is a classic I.P.A.! Highly Recommended

King & Barnes Old Porter – The beer is colored dark garnet, with a medium head that produced a good lace. The aroma is complex and abundant with malt. Some esters were also detectable. The flavor was very malty with a balanced bitterness. The beer was also very warming. The label states that that it is a "Strong Dark Ale". I agree, this is a classic English Strong Ale. Highly Recommended

OKTOBERFEST RE-CAP

This year proved to be another great gastronomical event. We had plenty of food and good Beer. Everything from the Brats to the Ale went perfectly. The club owes a Big Thank You to everyone who helped make this year’s event a success. The Raffle was full of great beer stuff, the new keg system was pretty smooth and the food lasted most of the day. I am planning to have a Pictorial Re-Cap in next month’s issue. But for now here are the results of the Tasters Choice Contest. Thanks to all that entered and allowed the PBD to enjoy the beer you worked so hard to brew. As usual there were a lot of great beers but only 1 can win and 2 others are mentioned.

1st Dan Oliver Vienna Lager

(Brewed on Wayne Desmond’s Equipment, built by Paul Wilson, at the PBD Brew In The Park)

2nd Gorman Selph Vienna Lager

***IBS Celebrates 15th Anniversary With Special Beers***

Boulder, CO - The Institute for Brewing Studies will celebrate its first 15 years, at the Great American Beer Festival (Oct. 1-3) in Denver, Colorado. The celebration will feature two beers brewed exclusively for the occasion, "IBS 15th Anniversary Ale, " brewed by the Sierra Nevada

Brewing Company, and "IBS 15th Anniversary Lager," brewed by the Stoudt Brewing Company.

The ale brewed by Sierra Nevada, is very similar to its "Harvest Ale," which was first brewed in limited batches (100 barrels) in 1996. The reddish-brown IBS 15th Anniversary Ale, is 6.7 percent alcohol by volume, and is hopped with freshly picked, "wet" hops. In Washington’s Yakima Valley, the Centennial (bittering) and Cascade (aroma) hop cones are pulled off the harvesting conveyor just before kilning, then packed and shipped by refrigerated truck to Sierra Nevada in Chico, CA., within 24 hours.

The result is dramatic. A strong and complex malty ale, with a hopping rate of 65-70 International Bittering Units. The aromatic qualities of the wet hops are unique. The hop oils are unchanged from the vine, and are much more intense than those from hops which have been dried.

The IBS 15th Anniversary Lager, is brewed by Carol and Ed Stoudt’s brewery in Adamstown, Pennsylvania. It is a Marzen beer, brewed with Pale two-row, Munich, Carapils and Caramel malts, German Hallertauer and Tettnanger hops, and Weihenstephan 34/70 lager yeast.

Brewed using a decoction mash, the mahogany-colored brew is fermented at 49 degrees F., and lagered for a full six months. The beer is 5.6 percent alcohol by volume (OG 15.2 Plato / 28 IBU), and is rich, malty and nutty. The balance is perfect, with a wonderful crispness in the finish. Only 75 barrels of this beer was brewed.

Ed and Carol Stoudt are original members of the IBS, which today boasts a membership of over 500 breweries and 1,500 individuals. If you would like to get your lips on these beers, or get more info on the Institute for Brewing Studies, call Karen Tacy at 303.447.0816.x.144, or email:

*** HappyHours.com Spotlight: Maris Otter Barley Malt***

Cambridge, England - Maris Otter barley has been grown in England since 1965. The barley was quickly recognized as superior for malting, and for many years was the only winter barley approved for malting by the British Institute of Brewers. Today, it is specially grown and is one of

the mainstays of the English regional and micro-brewing industries.

The two-row barley was bred by Dr. G. D. H. Bell, and his team at Cambridge University. By crossing spring malting barley, "Proctor," with the winter barley, "Pioneer," Dr. Bell created Maris Otter barley. Maris Otter takes on the malt characteristics of a spring barley combined with

the winter hardiness of Pioneer. This breakthrough allowed farmers to sow a more reliable crop with a higher market value.

Maris Otter grain has low nitrogen levels, which makes it uniquely reliable in both the malting process and in the brewery. The barley is grown in chalk-based soils, which stretch from Dorset in the south, along the ancient Icknield Way through Cambridgeshire, to the Norfolk coast of England.
